I've teamed with Sarah Jurney and my son, Sam, to author a pair of graphic novels about Sarah's oldest son, Nate. Working titles: Jurney of Hope and Jurney to Awakening.
As Nate began his high school baseball career in Colorado in 2005, he had all the tools: hose, wheels, sweet lefty stroke, and a soft glove. Then he got hit by cancer. He went from hurling a no-hitter to hurling in waste baskets. Throughout his surgeries, bouts of chemo, and painful physical therapy, he had one but question for his doctors: "When can I play ball?" Through his will to play and his need to win, he brought a team together, brought a community together, and then brought them all to their feet.

Jurney of HopeBone cancer had already taken Nate Jurney's left knee and five inches of his femur. When the disease returned, spreading to his lungs, the determined lefty had to decide. Would he spend his final days of high school in the hospital fighting to save his life or on the diamond with his buddies fighting to realize their dream of winning state?

Jurney to AwakeningAfter the fanfare of high school faded, Nate still had big dreams: playing college ball and becoming a pediatric oncologist. But cancer stubbornly stood in his way. He had surgery to attack the demon. But when he awoke, he had lost his memory and much of what he treasured. How he responded inspired a team and a legion of fans.
